My energy is up and down due to the heat and humidity—which isn’t as extreme as it was last month but is still pretty bad. I did get out for the 4th, but I didn’t bother to see the fireworks or celebrate in any way. (Drinking was enough.)
What is there to celebrate? The passing of the Big, Blowhard Bill? The fascist ICE raids? The potential end of American democracy?
I watched the movie Independence Day for the umpteenth time just to feel some sense of pride. That sense of pride only lasted until the credits rolled—then I realized just how awful our leaders are by comparison. Thomas J. Whitmore (played by Bill Pullman) was a far better president than Trump will ever be.
Note: In my rant I mention an incredible Independence Day speech by Frederick Douglass. I’ll link to it here in the hopes that you’ll read it. (If you don’t feel like reading, at least listen to the late, great James Earl Jones recite it.)
Let’s keep fighting the good fight so that the next July 4th is a more hopeful and less terrifying occasion.
